A Multi Engine Rating allows you to fly an airplane with 2 or more engines. It doesn’t matter if the engines are piston, turboprop, or jet. This rating does not have an associated knowledge test. You only need the required training and to pass the check ride.
A person who applies for an additional class rating on a pilot certificate:
1) Must have a logbook or training record endorsement from an authorized instructor attesting that the person was found competent in the appropriate aeronautical knowledge areas and proficient in the appropriate areas of operation.
2) Must pass the practical test.
3) Need not take an additional knowledge test, provided the applicant holds an airplane, rotorcraft, powered-lift, weight-shift-control aircraft, powered parachute, or airship rating at that pilot certificate level.
What this means is that if you already hold a Commercial Pilot license with ASEL, you don’t need to demonstrate that knowledge again to add a Multi Engine rating to this license, you only need to demonstrate that you can fly a multi engine airplane up to Commercial Pilot standards for it to be added to your Commercial Pilot license.
